  • Annual Sturgis Art Exhibition to be presented by Michael Lichter in Sturgis at Thunder Road August 4-11, 2007

    One World Choppers

The premise for One World Choppers was inspired by what has been termed "The British Invasion" of music from 1964-1966, when after exporting R&B, and early Rock & Roll overseas, Beat groups like the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds brought a changed Rock and Roll back to the United States; and the rest is history. In a similar way, Harley-Davidson motorcycles were exported all over the world, adapted to local means, and the local culture, and something new was born. This motorcycle themed exhibition will be limited to 24-foreign-born builder-artists, including many that live and work in the USA, and others who will come from overseas. It will demonstrate how these artists have influenced and contributed to the contemporary custom motorcycle scene in America. There will also be foreign-born 2-dimensional artists for the accompanying wall displays, whose work, while less known in America, is of great importance in their own countries. Accompanying text and commentary will be from editors of the foreign and domestic motorcycle press. Given the increasing interdependence of countries around the globe, this exhibition is particularly relevant in that by bringing together such a diverse group of people that share a common passion, it will stir thought and dialogue on contemporary issues, particularly globalization. Our One-World continues to get smaller, and what has happened with custom Harleys and custom choppers is a great example. Michael Lichter - February 2007

Confirmed participants in "One World Choppers"
Alan Lee (Gangsta Choppers, LA, CA. representing France)
Chica (Chica Custom Cycles, Huntington Beach, CA. representing Japan)
Cyril Huze (Cyril Huze Custom, Boca Raton, FL. representing France)
Frank Pedersen (Motorcycle Works, Olathe, KS. representing Norway)
Fred Kodlin (Fred Kodlin Motorcycles, Hessen. representing Germany)
Roger Goldammer (Goldammer Cycleworks, Kelowna, representing Canada)
Keino Sasaki (Indian Larry Legacy, Brooklyn, NY. representing Japan)
Mike Tomas (Kiwi Indian Motorcycles, Riverside,CA; representing New Zealand)
Rikki Battastini (Arlen Ness Motorcycles, Dublin, CA. representing England)
Russell Mitchell (Exile Cycles, North Hollywood, CA. representing England)
Tom Jansson (Swede Built, Stamford, CT. representing Sweden)

The exhibition will be held inside the "Thunder Dome" at "Thunder Road" three miles east of Sturgis. This 40,000 square foot covered structure is ideal for displaying bikes. As of last year, when this exhibition was moved after being held for five years at the Journey Museum in Rapid City, the show sponsors took a large area and created a gallery inside the building by laying gray carpet, building 24 pedestals to display bikes (each is 2' tall, covered in diamond plate and has carpeted sides, and four 28' long (x 2 sides = 56') gray carpeted walls for displaying artwork. It was an impressive undertaking and well received by the motorcycle industry and the public. The annual Tuesday night private industry / media party was well attended by over 400 guests, and the thousands of bikers that came through the display during the week was tremendous. Also inside the same structure, but clearly separate from the exhibition, is the Rick Fairless Strokers Saloon, and bike shows like the Metzeler show, AMD, the Biker/Penthouse show and the Rats Hole show. With AMD moving to a tent near Main Street, the show line-up is changing, but there will be the Metzeler show and Rats Hole Show again, and new for this year is a Horse magazine custom show, a paint company sponsored consumer ride-in show, and one additional show for which the details will be announced next week. Strokers Saloon will be back and something new for this year is the Hard Rock Roadhouse, set up right in the middle of the structure, with an improved stage an entertainment.

The exhibition opens to the public Saturday morning, August 4th and will remain open through Friday, August 10th. With 24 customs in the show, there are more bikes than any one magazine can cover so I am working with all of the domestic and foreign motorcycle press to be sure all the bikes get featured this year. Bikes should arrive in Sturgis Thursday August 2, or Friday August 3 (by 1PM) so they can be set up on time, and can be removed any time after 7 PM Friday night, August 10.

As I was born in the US and don't fit the criteria as they are defined, I will be acting solely as the producer / curator and will not exhibit my own photography. There will also be at least four foreign born visual artists represented on the walls. It has been difficult coming up with a good roster of foreign born artists that include motorcycles in their art. I am open to suggestions if you have any, but I am particularly attracted to unique and non-traditional styles of work. I think some of the graphic artists that do T-shirt art and art for the motorcycle magazines could be a great addition.
