Following his August 14, 09 sentencing regarding the vehicular homicide case in connection with a September 4, 2006 crash that left Gerald Morelock dead, Billy Lane is currently serving a 6 years prison time at the Avon Park Work Camp in Florida. Lanes attorneys Greg Eisenmenger and Robert Berry just filed in 18th Judicial Circuit Court a defense motion to reduce this sentencing. If you remember, during sentencing, the victims brother, Byron Morelock, and nephew, Sean Morelock, declined to recommend a prison sentence to Circuit Judge Robert Burger. Instead they recommended a punishment that would use Lanes celebrity status to help save the lives of young people through a foundation they plan to create.
They also said they had built a relationship with Lane, who made a sincere face-to-face apology early in the case. Gerald Morelocks family members have remained in contact with Billy Lane after his August sentencing. Because of the pressure of being in court with important media presence, Billys attorneys state that the victims family was not able to express correctly their feelings about the type of punishment they wanted. They want Judge Robert Burger to give the Morelocks another opportunity to be heard and to cut Lanes sentence if he sees appropriate. Assistant State Attorney Tom Brown reacted by stating that it is unlikely that killing another does not deserve a prison sentence. The question is will Judge Burger amend/reduce the sentencing by following more closely Morelocks family recommendation? No hearing date has yet been set for this defense motion.
